Millions of dollars in gold stolen from Toronto airport

Sylvie Claire / April 22, 2023

Canadian police announced Thursday that they are investigating a theft of more than C$20 million worth of gold and valuables from the Toronto airport earlier this week.

The gold and expensive items arrived Monday night by plane and were unloaded and placed in a logistics shed, said Stephen Duivesteyn, a local police official, before their absence was noticed shortly after.

"The container containing these valuables was taken with illegal means from the storage space," he said at a press conference.

He did not give any information about the modus operandi or about any suspect.

Our investigators are keeping all leads open," he told the press, adding that such a misdeed, "very rare", had no impact on passenger traffic.

According to the local Toronto Sun newspaper, more than 1.6 tons of gold vanished from the airport - far more than the 20 million Canadian dollars cited by authorities.
