Zelensky in Ottawa: Canada announces C$650 million in aid for Ukraine

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau received President Volodymyr Zelensky in the capital Ottawa on Friday, September 22. The Canadian leader announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth 650 million Canadian dollars. The three-year aid package will include the delivery to Kiev of some 50 armored vehicles and the training of Ukrainian pilots in F-16 fighter jets, Mr. Trudeau announced before the Canadian Parliament. Ukraine has "carried out a missile attack against the headquarters of the Russian fleet" in the Black Sea, in Sevastopol, Crimea, the regional governor said on Friday September 22. Crimea was hit by an "unprecedented" cyberattack, a Russian official later announced. On Friday, the Ukrainian army claimed responsibility for a "successful strike" on the Russian fleet headquarters.
 
The Ukrainian president is visiting Ottawa, where he is due to deliver a speech to Parliament. Upon his arrival on Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau assured the Ukrainian people of his country's "unwavering support". Canada has the second largest Ukrainian diaspora in the world after Russia, with some 1.4 million people of Ukrainian origin living in the country.
 
Joe Biden said on Thursday that the first Abrams tanks would arrive in Ukraine "next week". The American president also announced that he had approved a new tranche of military assistance to Kiev, valued by the Pentagon at some $325 million.
