Purchasing power, health and climate: Borne sets the three emergencies of the government

Steph Deschamps / May 28, 2022

The purchasing power, health and climate are the three emergencies that the government must address, said Friday Elisabeth Borne after setting three watchwords to his ministers gathered at Matignon: speed, efficiency and results.

The first weeks of our action must be devoted to responding to the emergencies of the French, pleaded the Prime Minister at the end of a two-hour meeting at Matignon with the entire government.

Having taken office in mid-May against a backdrop of high inflation, Ms. Borne has set three priorities, starting with purchasing power, which will give rise to measures as soon as parliament resumes its work after the legislative elections (June 12 and 19).

We agreed that no one should be forgotten or left out. In addition to pensioners, employees, the self-employed and public servants, I have asked my ministers to pay particular attention to students, Borne told reporters.

A few hours later, the Prime Minister once again hammered home the importance of the subject of purchasing power by returning to the field in Calvados, where she is a candidate in the 6th constituency for the legislative elections.

The first text that the deputies will have to vote, it is a text to continue to contain this surge in energy prices, confirmed Ms. Borne during a meeting with business leaders, associations and elected officials in Condé-en-Normandie. The bill that will be on top of the pile is precisely to extend (the) tariff shield, she added, in response to a business leader who feared a recession next year.

On a trip to the Loire to support young candidates for the legislative elections, the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire said that it would also include maintaining the 18 cents of aid for the price of fuel as well as indexation measures for pensions and social benefits.

While hospitals are facing a shortage of staff, Ms. Borne also assured, at the end of the meeting at Matignon, to have asked the ministers concerned to make proposals very quickly to take effective measures for the summer.

Finally, the head of government said she wanted to carry out the construction site of ecological planning at a fast pace, calling on all ministries to mobilize and participate.

In order to follow up on these roadmaps, she announced that a government seminar would be held before the end of June around Emmanuel Macron. And that she herself would gather the ministers in the same format every month at Matignon.
