At the G7, the United States opposed a “strong” statement on Ukraine

Donald Trump's United States opposed a “strong” G7 statement on Ukraine that would condemn Russia, arguing that it wanted to preserve its ability to negotiate, a government source in Canada, the summit's host country, said on Tuesday.
There will be “no separate statement” on Ukraine, “because the Americans wanted to water it down”, added this source on the final day of the G7 leaders' summit attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The other six G7 members agreed on “strong language”, but a joint statement would have required the agreement of the United States.
“Given that the Americans are acting as intermediaries at the moment, that they are trying to negotiate an agreement with Russia regarding the war in Ukraine,” they did not agree, the Canadian government source explained.
“So we chose to take what was in the statement that was supposed to be released, and include all the strong language on Ukraine in the statement by the chair” of the G7, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, she said.
While the issue of the conflict in Ukraine was on the menu for joint discussions on Tuesday, it was also discussed on Monday when President Trump was present.
The Ukrainian president had come to plead his country's cause and ask Donald Trump for more sanctions against Russia.
But he says he didn't get the chance to meet the American president, with whom he has a stormy relationship, as the latter left the summit early to focus on the conflict between Israel and Iran.
