The American president has ordered a “pause” in US military aid to Ukraine, three days after the White House altercation with Volodymyr Zelensky. A pause to “re-examine and ensure that the aid contributes to the search for a solution” to the conflict with Russia, according to the White House.
This mainly concerns military aid already approved under Joe Biden's former administration. This has already been largely paid for, but equipment and weapons have yet to be delivered.
Donald Trump has not been taking kindly to Volodymyr Zelensky since the meeting at the White House on Friday February 28, which turned into a verbal confrontation. Yesterday, the Republican stepped up his threats against his Ukrainian counterpart, accusing him of “not wanting peace” with Russia.
Echoing the American president's comments, the Kremlin yesterday said that Zelensky had to be “forced” because “he doesn't want peace”.
However, Donald Trump believes that the agreement on access to Ukrainian minerals could still be concluded.
For his part, the Ukrainian head of state reiterated his desire to “put an end to this war as quickly as possible.” He stressed the importance of maintaining diplomacy and reiterated his call for Ukraine to be provided with security guarantees.
A summit in Brussels on Thursday March 6will focus on Ukraine and European security issues.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stressed yesterday that “the risk of war on the European continent, in the European Union, has never been so high” since the fall of the Communist regimes in Europe over 35 years ago.
