Kremlin rules out international investigation after plane crash

Steph Deschamps / September 1, 2023

No international investigation will look into the plane crash in which Wagner militia leader Yevgeny Prigozhin lost his life, the Kremlin has decided. Russia will itself investigate the case, several media, including Politico, reported on Wednesday.

Yevgeny Prigozhin was traveling with his entourage aboard a Brazilian-made Embraer Legacy 600, which crashed north of Moscow last week. Brazil's aviation authority, CENIPA, said it would participate in a Russian-led investigation if invited to do so by Moscow.

In the wake of the crash, some eyes turned to Russia, as the head of the private militia had been highly critical of Moscow and its military leadership since the invasion of Ukraine. He even led a rebellion against the Kremlin at the end of June, which was quickly abandoned. The Kremlin has described the accusations levelled at Vladimir Putin in this affair as lies.
