Shooting at a university in Panama: one student dead, another wounded

Steph Deschamps / June 9, 2024

Two men opened fire on Friday on a group of students in the grounds of a university in southwestern Panama, killing one and wounding another in an apparent settling of scores, Panamanian police said.

According to the initial investigation, two men "fired shots at a group of people", said Deputy Commissioner Hector Delgado in a video posted on the Panamanian police's X account.

According to him, the motive was a settling of scores between criminal groups.

Earlier, the rector of the University of Panama had reported that "an unknown person opened fire on a group of agricultural science students at the Veraguas Regional University Center", 250 km from the capital, "who were carrying out a practical exercise in the compound ».

An investigation has been opened by the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Shootings are rare in Panama, especially at universities. In 2023, 544 homicides were recorded in the country of 4.4 million inhabitants.
