Two people were killed after shots were fired at a Mercedes factory site in southwestern Germany, a police spokeswoman said Thursday. A 53-year-old suspect was arrested at the site in Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart.

A first report indicated that one person was dead and one seriously injured, but the latter succumbed to his injuries. Both victims were 44 years old.

These and the alleged perpetrator are employees of an external provider, said a spokesman for Mercedes.

"Employees providing security at the plant neutralized the suspect in the production hall and then handed him over to the police, who arrested him," authorities added.

The exact circumstances of the shooting have yet to be clarified, but according to the police, the workers are no longer in danger. Many of them were nevertheless sent home.

According to the German daily newspaper Bild, the emergency services and the police came in large numbers to the factory.

Mercedes has its oldest factory in Sindelfigen, not far from Stuttgart where the group is based, where some 35,000 people are employed.

The Sindelfingen plant produces several top-of-the-line Mercedes models such as the S-class and the Maybach luxury sedans.
