Facebook and Snapchat caught spying on iPhone users, even though they have banned data tracking

Sylvie Claire / December 11, 2021

According to a Financial Times report, Facebook and Snapchat are reportedly still tracking iPhone users who have opted out of app tracking. Since the IOS 14.5 update made available in early 2021, users can better control the use of their data with the App Tracking Transparency (ATT) feature. This allows you to choose whether an app can track your activity on other apps and websites to collect your data.

According to the Financial Times, Facebook and Snapchat have found a way around this feature through a loophole in Apple's design. With this system, the companies can't collect your unique and identifiable data with third parties, but there's nothing stopping them from collecting your data anonymously.

Facebook and Snapchat share this data as anonymous groups, according to the Financial Times report.

If you want to monitor tracking activity on your iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy > Tracking.
