Revolution on the web: the name of Facebook should soon change

Steph Deschamps / October 20, 2021

Facebook's name will soon be changed, according to U.S. technology blog The Verge. Executive Mark Zuckerberg is expected to explain the company's name change, which has been under fire on several fronts for some time, at the company's annual Connect conference next Thursday.

This new name, according to The Verge, should reflect the ambitions of the group in the metaverse (contraction of meta-universe), this recent concept that describes a next generation of Internet, a sort of digital double of the physical world.

The metaverse is a universe in which all virtual spaces are connected. The virtual reality services Facebook already offers with Oculus are expected to play a major role in this vision, for Zuckerberg.

In July, Zuckerberg said he expects that in the coming years, people will no longer think of us primarily as a social media company, but as a metaverse company.

The social network Facebook may keep the same name, as will other Facebook brands that also have billions of users, such as Instagram and Whatsapp. The name change would involve the parent company. Previously, Google launched a similar rebranding - the parent company is now called Alphabet Inc.

A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment.
