The United States will adopt a package of "major sanctions" against Moscow on Friday following the death in prison of Russian opponent Alexei Navalny, the White House announced on Tuesday.

"At President Biden's initiative, on Friday we will announce a major set of sanctions to hold Russia accountable for what happened to Mr. Navalny," said John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council.

Mr. Kirby said the new sanctions were also in response to "all the acts (of Moscow) that are part of this cruel and brutal war that has been raging for two years" in Ukraine.

The death of Mr. Navalny, 47, in a remote Arctic prison where he was serving a 19-year sentence after surviving a poisoning incident in 2020 for which he blamed the Kremlin, was announced on Friday. He died after three years in prison.

According to John Kirby, "whatever story the Russian government decides to tell the world, it's clear that President Putin and his government are responsible ».
