Joe Biden withdraws from White House race: “It's in the country's interest”

Steph Deschamps / Judy 23, 2024

The current President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced on Sunday in a statement that he would not be running for President in 2024.

Although his intention was to run again, Joe Biden now says he believes it is “in the best interests” of his party “and the country” for him to step aside and concentrate on his duties as president until the end of his term.

“I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country that I step down and focus solely on carrying out my duties as president until the end of my term,” he announced, in a statement, announcing that he would address the nation ‘later this week’.

This shock announcement, even if it was expected despite repeated denials by the main person concerned, upsets a campaign that has already seen many twists and turns, foremost among them the assassination attempt on Donald Trump on July 13.

We now need to find a replacement for Mr. Biden, who was due to be inducted at his party's convention in Chicago in mid-August.

His vice-president Kamala Harris would be a natural, but not automatic, choice to become the Democrats' nominee.

The last word goes to the Democratic Party delegates, 3,900 people with a wide variety of backgrounds, most of them completely unknown to the general public.
