Joe Biden's son to appear in person on September 26 for illegal possession of a firearm

U.S. President Joe Biden's son, Hunter, has been summoned to appear in person on September 26 in Delaware (east) for his public indictment for illegal possession of a weapon, according to a ruling issued Wednesday.

The judge denied California resident Hunter Biden's request to appear by videoconference.

Mr. Biden will plead not guilty and there is no reason why he can't say those two words via videoconference," wrote his lawyer, Abbe David Lowell, in a letter to the judge on Tuesday.

But Judge Christopher Burke's reasoning was that this first appearance "is one of the rare occasions in a criminal case when a defendant physically appears before our court, before a judge ».

Furthermore, "most of the charges against the defendant are new and were not raised at his previous appearance in July 2023, so this will be the first time they have been discussed in court," he adds.

Hunter Biden is accused of lying when filling out forms to acquire a firearm in 2018, in which he denied the drug addiction he later admitted to.

In June, he had reached a guilty plea agreement with prosecutor David Weiss covering both tax fraud and illegal firearm acquisition charges, which would probably have enabled him to avoid prison and an embarrassing trial for himself and his father.

However, this agreement was cancelled following doubts raised in July by a judge as to the validity of the arrangement.
