Storms in Italy: the north of the country hit by floods and landslides

Sylvie Claire / July 30, 2021

Northern Italy was still mired on Wednesday, after torrential rains caused flooding and landslides in particular, east of Lake Maggiore

The president of Lombardy, a region particularly affected by the bad weather, has requested that a state of emergency be declared for several provinces, including those of Varese, Como and Lecco.

In the province of Varese, emergency services were deployed in about 40 places for landslides and floods.

In Como, about a hundred operations were carried out on Tuesday. Some roads were inaccessible and some people were blocked in their homes.

The civil protection has issued a new alert, of a higher level, for Thursday in the extreme north of Lombardy. Violent storms are expected in the area.
