California fires: three arson suspects arrested

Steph Deschamps / January 16, 2025

The information was reported Tuesday by Los Angeles Police Commander Steven Embrich at a press conference. A total of 14 people have been arrested in recent days following the fires in the Palisades area on the West Coast, said Steven Embrich.

“We have made three notable arrests outside the fire zone,” he added. The three people, suspected of arson, were arrested on Sunday and Monday.

The police commander added that the other suspects were arrested for curfew violations, impersonating a firefighter or police officer, vandalism or burglary.

A federal investigation was launched on Tuesday to determine the causes of the fires in Los Angeles, the US federal authorities announced. The ATF, the agency in charge of the investigation, added that the process would take time.

The latest death toll from California authorities is 25. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, at least 13 people are still missing in Palisades, but are not presumed dead.

The situation on site remains precarious: gusts of up to 110 km/h on Wednesday morning could still fan the flames. Parts of Los Angeles County and neighboring Ventura County have been placed under “particularly hazardous conditions”.
